Commissioning a piece of calligraphy

1. Contact me to discuss
Initially please contact me either by telephone (01291 689 443) or email (valleycalligraphy@btopenworld.com) to discuss the piece of work you wish to commission. Where appropriate, please supply all required text and, if you already have them, an idea of size, style, material, any script and colour preferences and whether you require any illumination or ornamentation. Also consider whether you want the final piece framed as, along with any involved processes and special techniques, this can make quite a difference to the price.

2. Estimate supplied
At this point I may be able to give you an outline estimate for the work to be undertaken, but I will provide a non-obligatory written estimate for the work as soon as possible thereafter.

3. Deposit and first draft
On agreement of the estimate, I will require a 50% deposit before the next stage of the process when I will produce and supply a first draft showing layout to scale, and the styles and colours discussed and agreed at the outset. This can either be emailed or posted to you, and following your approval of this, I will commence the final piece of work.

4. Work dispatched, balance due
Where appropriate, an image of the final piece will be supplied on completion and prior to dispatch. Once this has been approved, the balance is due and then the work can be delivered by the pre-arranged method, unless it is to be collected when at this point, the balance can be paid.

Materials and Framing

A whole host of materials and techniques are used in the production of calligraphy. Work can be
produced on either traditional vellum or parchment or on finest handmade art paper. Lettering can be
executed in a variety of inks and gouaches (artists paints) and specialist techniques include illumination,
incorporating gilding (the addition of finest 24c leaf and shell gold, silver & bronze leaf) and
ornamentation (decorating with artwork).

I can also arrange for your calligraphy or artwork to be framed by a local picture framer and am happy
to oversee the process to ensure that the most suitable mouldings and mounts are used to complement
the final piece. Please contact me for a price.
